Wow! Thanks for the great site! You've earned a faithful reader. Keep up the great work!

Question for you:
If I'm doing a full database restore on a different server from where the RMAN backups were taken how do I tell to what point-in-time (or sequence number) that I can do a restore and recover to?

The scenario is that my backup administrator retrieved a full backup (.arc, .bak, and backup control files). I've cataloged them successfully and eventually was able to restore the database. However it was very difficult!

Some of the datafiles' backups in the fileset had expired whereas others were good up until a different point-in-time. Finding a common point-in-time for which all datafiles could be restored to from the backup set provided me was very difficult.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks again for a wonderful site!
